Our Staff

Akron Sea Cadets Officers and Instructors are all 100% volunteers.  Each, plus any additional parent volunteers all undergo extensive personal & professional reference checks as well as an FBI background check.

Commanding Officer
LTJG Courtney Schroeter, NSCC

LTJG Schroeter has been involved with the USNSCC program since 2010.  He is a professional Emergency Medical Technician and firefighter with over thirteen years experience.  His respect for our service men and woman comes from having many family members, both past and present serve in various branches of service.  His father serviced in Vietnam as DC2 (Damage Control Petty Officer 2nd Class) and grandfathers in WWII and Korea.


  • Certified Heartsaver® CPR, First Aid and AED Instructor (AHA) 
  • Certified BLS Health Care Provider CPR Instructor (AHA)
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Instructor (AHA)
  • Certified Ohio Firefighter 1 and EMT-B
  • Deployed with FEMA during Hurricane Sandy

Executive Officer
ENS Darryl Ritchey, NSCC

ENS Ritchey joined the US Navy direct from High School and served four years aboard USS Richard E. Byrd (DDG-23) as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class.  Stationed out of Norfolk, VA, his service took him to seventeen countries, taking part in UNITAS, Med Cruise and drug operations across the world.

After leaving the Navy he trained as an HVAC engineer, and is currently retired.

LS2 Zachary Kirby, USN

Training Officer
ENS Brandan Thompson, NSCC

SPC Thompson was a paratrooper in the 82nd airborne for the United States Army. MOS was a Joint Fires Observer responsible for calling in Mortars, Artillery, Helicopter attacks, and Airstrikes. He has deployed to areas such as Haiti (Humanitarian mission), Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Thompson was a Cadet with the Akron Battalion Sea Cadets for three years prior to enlisting in the Army.
